President’s Message

The solar aerator for our lake has been installed and is operational. This is the result of a long and detailed process that involved a lot of our members and a lot of other organizations. It started with identifying a problem; talking to DNR and having them visit our lake. After DNR advised installing it for the health of the lake, we then spoke with the BCC Chapter (who had experience with the aerator), who directed us to a supplier who would give us a discount on the unit. We then took all that information and prepared a shared-cost proposal to the IWL Endowment. Following an oral presentation and defense to the IWL Endowment Board at the last National Convention, we were authorized the grant, and we placed the order.

We finally received delivery of the unit late last year -- too late to consider installation. But this Spring, after the weather turned good, and with the help of a lot of our members, the job was done. Bill Jackson and Dave Drengwitz took the lead in installation, with lots of help from Bill Askins, George Brill, Bobby Dewese, Lee Hays, Mark Lewis, Tony Lueddeke, Bill Pastor, Tom Perazella, Andrew Ralowicz, David Steinfeld, and Mark Vollaro. Most heartfelt thanks to all!

Miles Greenbaum, President

Tinker to Speak at May Meeting

Walter (Tinker) Johnson, of Tinkers Taxidermy in Poolesville, will be speaking to us at the May 7 general membership meeting. He was originally scheduled for the April meeting, but an emergency situation prevented that from happening. Tink was last at our Chapter four or five years ago and proved to be a most informative and entertaining speaker about local hunting and trapping issues, and about life as a taxidermist. Not to be missed.

The Rockville Email Group

The Rockville Chapter operates a members-only email list for announcements and discussions among members. To sign up, send an email identifying yourself to iwlar-owner@yahoogroups.com.

The Rockville Chapter Has Two New Directors

At the April meeting we held a general election to fill two openings on the Board of Directors Our two new Directors are Dave Brackna and Jack Cochran. We appreciate that both of these members have committed a significant amount of their time to support the Rockville Chapter. Welcome aboard gentlemen.

Trap Range Use Policy Change Coming Soon

Current rules allow anyone “Range Approved” (Range Officers are not an issue) to shoot unsupervised when a Duty Range Officer is present at the pistol range. The Range Safety Committee has agreed that additional safety and shotgun training is required to make our Trap Range more secure.

A separate course will be offered to all current and future “Range Approved” members that would like to use the Trap Range during normal range hours on Saturdays and Sundays. It would focus on general shotgun safety, safety issues specific to the IWLA-R range and basic shotgun skills. This would be offered monthly and will supplement the Range Approved course. The training would be available to all RO’s that are interested as well.

A detailed explanation will be distributed on the IWLAR group site, and this notice will be repeated in the June newsletter to alert current Range Approved Trap users that they will need additional training/certification and to sign up with Dick Chiapparoli . The course will be held after the 6/4 “Range Approved” training.  Probably Saturday 6/5, 6/12 and/or 6/19 (stay tuned) and may last 2 – 3 hours (course still in development).

Trap certification cards will be issued to those who complete this training. The cards will be checked by the duty DRO. The DRO will still open/close the trap range. Please note that no person or group will be allowed to use the Trap range without at least one "Trap Range Approved" member (with card) after 7/1.

The Worrells, Dave and Dave Jr. will be running the 3D Archery Program this year. Dave has chosen May 16, 8am – 1pm, for the start date. There will be two work parties, May 1st to clear shooting lanes and May 8th to setup targets, from 8am to noon both days. Come out and help with the work parties to earn some hours. Call Dave  to learn how you can help run 3D Archery.

Tom Beavers Receives the Chapter’s Tobin Award

Tom Beavers, the conscience of the Rockville Chapter, was presented with the Tobin Award at the April membership meeting. Tom has been a member and true believer in IWLA for longer than some of our members have been walking on earth. As a member of the League he has been very active at the chapter and the national levels. Most recently Tom has represented Maryland Ikes at the IWLA National Conventions as a National Director. Our sincere congratulations to Mr. Beavers for his being recognized for a job well done.

Pistol Range Workparty Accomplished Much

The April 11 pistol range work party was a great success. We managed to perform all of.the planned spring maintenance, including walking all the perimeter of the fence. We also started preparing the ground for the work at position 9. A really big thank you to the following volunteers: Armando Danini, Daniel Reggia, Tom Perazella, Bruce Cottom, Skip McConkey, Stephanie Carpenter, Tanya A. Filkins, Robert Collins, Kent Shaw, Jerry Czecha, and, probably, somebody else who didn't sign their name on the roster.

I will organize a few more work parties for general maintenance work and some specifically for constructing the new, multi-purpose position 9. For these specialized parties, I prefer if you could provide me with your e-mail address and your interests/skills, so that I could organize more focused and specific activities, knowing ahead of time how many hands and kinds of skills I could count on.

This event is open to all members and their families. Weather permitting, we will dine 'al fresco' on the patio, with some additional seating indoors for those who prefer it. The bar will be open for cash donations. If you are interested in assisting with this event, contact Kim at kimi_g1@msn.com. The Lake was Stocked with Trout on April 12

Come on out and catch some trout. Power bait, meal worms and even earth worms have worked for some. As usual the daily limit is three per member. If you bring a guest, the guest’s catch counts as part of your three-a-day limit. The bass have started to become active too. Remember that bass can only be fished on a catch-and-release basis. Look for a notice on the yahoo group about a stocking of catfish that is planned – possibly in May.

One New Member Inducted in April

We had only one new member sworn in at the April meeting – Mr. Jim Greene of Chevy Chase. While that seems to be a drop in quantity, Jim makes up for that in the way of quality. Jim, along with Sandy Burk, runs the “Trout in the Classroom” program that teaches school age youngster how to raise trout in their schools, which are later released into local waters. So, we have a new member that’s a practicing conservationist. Jim also runs an internet based business that sells fly fishing gear at waterwisp.com. - check it out. Jim is an interesting guy.

The Chapter Needs a Scouting Liaison

New board member Jack Cochran, along with Claire Usilton will provide the after-meeting food at our May general membership meeting.  The menu offered will be: Chicken Wings, Jack's Famous Coleslaw, and Chocolate Brownies
